Telangana government approves GHMC reorganisation; expanded GHMC to have 300 wards

Hyderabad: Telangana government has notified the expansion of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the expanded municipal corporation covering Telangana Core Urban region will have 300 wards, as per a GO issued on Monday, December 8.

The move comes after the recent merger of 20 municipalities and seven municipal corporations located near and around Outer Ring Road (ORR) into the GHMC. The geographic spread of the GHMC now has expanded from 650 sq km to 2,000 sq km, which means a redrawing of ward boundaries.

The Centre for Good Governance carried out the Ward Reorganisation Framework for the GHMC in context of the proposed merger of 27 urban local bodies and that formed the basis of the GO, it read.

In the new set up, the GHMC will now have 300 corporators, elected on one-member per ward basis. Until now, GHMC functioned with 150 wards, 30 circles, six zones in its earlier limits.

After the expansion, it will be administered through up to 10 zones, 50 circles. The GHMC Commissioner will invite objections to the expansion from the public. The notification seeking feedback will be issue don Tuesday or Wednesday.
