Mumbai BMC election 2026 date announced: All you need to know

As per the schedule, BMC polls will be held on January 15, 2026 from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. The counting of votes will be held on January 16. Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was enforced on December 15 in all areas falling under the municipal corporations.

Mumbai: The State Election Commission (SEC) has announced the dates for elections to 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). As per the schedule, voting will be held on January 15, 2026 from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. The counting of votes will be held on January 16.

Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was enforced on December 15 in all areas falling under the municipal corporations. The BMC election is held to elect corporators who manage the civic body of Mumbai. The BMC is responsible for basic services and infrastructure in India’s largest city.

  • Voting will be held on January 15 from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. Counting of votes will be held on January 16.
  • Any Indian citizen who is 18 years or older and is a regular resident of the concerned area is eligible to vote. However, voting is allowed only if the person’s name appears on the official Voter List, also called the Electoral Roll. Voters can also check details related to polling booths, candidates, election schedules, and voting procedures.
  • Voters can search for their names on the Electoral Roll by visiting the official website: https://electoralsearch.eci.gov.in
  • Voters must carry valid photo identity document. Accepted IDs include the EPIC or Voter ID card, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Government Service ID, Bank or Post Office Passbook with a photograph, MNREGA Job Card, Health Insurance Smart Card, pension documents with photo, and official identity cards issued to MPs, MLAs, or MLCs. Photo voter slips alone will not be accepted as valid proof.

Political parties to contest BMC elections 2026

The civic body polls in Maharashtra are expected mainly between two alliances. The ruling Mahayuti alliance that includes the BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. On the opposition side, the Maha Vikas Aghadi consists of the Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP–SP.
