Mumbai: More than 25,000 passengers were reported at the first five days of commercial operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which began on December 25, officials said on Tuesday.

As per them, the airport recorded over 26,021 passengers in as may days. While 12,431 of them were arriving passengers at the airport, 13,590 were departing passengers. The number of passenger figures reflected robust demand and consistent booking activity since the launch of the airport.

According to the, the number of passengers taking flights from or landing at the airport increased over the weekend. The airport, during the said period, managed as many as 162 scheduled air traffic movements. It comprised of 81 departures and 81 arrivals. Over 11,000 passengers travelled to and from the airports in weekends.

Similarly, according to reports, the airport handled 21,112 passengers in first four days of operations. Even as t 9,929 passengers arrived at the airport in first four days, a total of 11,183 passengers departed from the said airport.

NMIA reflects strong outbound

It reflects the strong outbound at the time when people are looking to go out on holiday to celebrate the New Year. The airport handled 130 flights in the first four days. Domestic flights are operating in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad, among others. Currently, the airport is operating for just 12 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM. Currently, the airport has the capacity to handle 24 daily departures in 13 destinations.

No confirmation yet on international operations

While there is no confirmed report on when international operations will start, some reports suggest that the same may start on February 26. However, others have suggested that regulatory clearances and airline readiness may take the launch time to June next year.
