BHU PhD admission 2025-26 open through JRF, NET, direct modes; apply by December 16

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has opened PhD admissions for 2025-26 through JRF, NET and direct modes. Applications close on December 16, 2025. Interviews for various faculties will be held from January 5 to 16. Eligibility, selection criteria and reserved seats vary by mode with a second cycle starting February 12.

New Delhi: Banaras Hindu University started the BHU Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) admission 2026 application process. Aspirants have the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies through Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), National Eligibility Test (NET) and direct admission modes. The BHU PhD applications are available on the official portal, bhuonline.in. The last date to apply is December 16, 2025.

Candidates must prepare essential documents including a valid email ID, mobile number, scanned photograph, signature, and payment facility before submitting their application.

Interview schedule, eligibility criteria

Interviews for applicants in arts, social sciences, medicine, Ayurveda, and science faculties will be conducted between January 5 and 16, 2026. For commerce, education, SVDV, management studies, veterinary and animal sciences, law, ESD, dental sciences, visual arts, performing arts, and agriculture sciences, interviews will be held from January 10 to 16.

BHU PhD eligibility varies by admission mode. Candidates under the JRF category must hold fellowships from UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DBT, or other national agencies, with merit determined solely by interview percentile. UGC or CSIR NET-qualified candidates, including ICAR-SRF for agriculture, will have their total scores calculated with 70 per cent weightage for qualifying exam scores and 30 per cent for interview performance. Direct admissions are reserved for candidates with nationally or internationally recognised scholarships or senior management professionals with at least 12 years of experience and a minimum age of 43 years.

Reserved seats, second admission cycle

Research personnel, permanent faculty or non-teaching employees working on externally funded projects may also apply for reserved seats. A second admission cycle will begin on February 12, 2026, to fill any remaining seats, and vacant seats in one mode may be transferred to another mode.
