CBSE reiterates 75 per cent attendance rule for Class 10, 12 board exams 2026

The CBSE board has reiterated that students must have at least 75 per cent attendance to appear in the Class 10 and 12 board exams 2026. A 25 per cent relaxation is allowed only for valid reasons, with supporting documents.

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education has recently issued a fresh directive which reiterates the mandatory requirement of 75 per cent attendance of students appearing in the CBSE Class 10, 12 board exams 2026. The directive is a continuation of an earlier circular released last year. The 25 per cent relaxation is only in cases of exigencies such as medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports events, and other serious reasons. However, supporting documents are required to be submitted in such a case.

Along with the directive, the board has also released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for those who fall short of the required attendance. The SOP include detailing steps that schools need to take for condonation cases. The board has asked schools to-

Inform students, parents about attendance requirement, leave application

Students and parents must be made aware of the mandatory 75 per cent attendance requirement and the consequences of not meeting it. If any students is on leave he or she needs to apply for the same with the required documents (medical documents required in case of medical leave).

During inspection if it is found that If it is students are absent without proper leave records, it will be presumed that they he or she is not attending the school regularly and may be treated as non-attending or dummy students. The board will also not allow such students to appear for the exam.

Attendance Monitoring

The schools must regularly monitor and maintain correct attendance records. The attendance registers needs to be updated daily, duly signed by the class teacher and the competent authority of the school and be available for inspection by the board.

Communication to Parents

If a student frequently misses school or fails to meet the attendance requirement, the school must inform the parents in writing and send it through registered or speed post, e-mail highlighting the importance of regular attendance. Schools also need to state that failure to comply with attendance may lead to the student being disqualified from appearing in the board exams.  A copy of this communication should be sent to the parents of all schools through email for the information and strict compliance by the students and parents.

Inspections by CBSE

To verify the attendance of students, the board may conduct surprise inspections. In such inspections, if it is found that the records are incomplete or students are found not to be attending the school regularly then strict action will be taken including disaffiliation. Students may also be disqualified from appearing in the board exams.
