New Delhi: Amid the weakening of the Indian rupee against the dollar, the cost of studying abroad has come under debate. As the rupee crossed the 90 mark, it is not just investors and entrepreneurs but also study abroad aspirants raised concerns.
Edelweiss MD and CEO Radhika Gupta has shared a bold fact that is an eye-opener, calling for a reconsideration of the true cost of international education. Many have raised concerns that Rs 10 crore for US education in 15 years is required. However, her explanation for this on her official X handle is unique.
Gupta believes that we can never predict the future, whether the rupee will fall or rise in the coming years. However, she feels that it is safe to factor in 2-4% currency depreciation over a long period.
Radhika Gupta said on her official X handle, “10 cr education!? I had got a lot of messages around these posts on saving 10 cr. for a US education in 15 years. One of the prime reasons for factoring in such large costs was currency depreciation. As INR hits 90, multiple folks are writing back to me.”
“I still maintain I cannot predict where the currency will go in a year, but it is safe to factor in 2-4% currency depreciation over a long period, given that maintaining export competitiveness is important for India. This is also the reason that some part of the portfolio should be in international assets (including US), especially if you will have expenses abroad. What we cannot predict, we can prepare for. PS I know a lot of Indian investors cannot invest overseas because of limits being unavailable. Solving that problem via GIFT, very soon with two funds!," she added.
Radhika Gupta defended that we can never imagine how the future will be. What we can do is prepare for it. Hence, Indian families must invest in international assets, which include international education. She argues that investing in rupees for an expense that will be denominated in dollars always means taking a risk.
In May 2025, Radhika shared the match regarding how education can cost 10 crore. The current amount for US education is 2.5 crore. If the inflation is 5 per cent and currency depreciation is 4 per cent in 16 years, the total cost will be around 10 crores.
