Harvard tops Times Higher Education’s 2025 World Reputation Rankings; MIT, Oxford share 2nd place

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2025 place Harvard University at the top, followed by MIT and the University of Oxford in second place. The list highlights strong dominance by US and UK institutions while showcasing the rising global influence of Asian universities like Tsinghua, Tokyo and NUS.

New Delhi: The Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2025 have been released after measuring universities’ reputation in teaching, research and overall academic influence. This year’s list highlights the continued dominance of Western institutions while reflecting the rapid rise of Asian universities on the world stage.

Harvard University once again claims the  the first spot, reaffirming its status as the most prestigious university in the world. Its leadership in research innovation, global impact, and academic excellence sets it apart in every reputation survey.

MIT and the University of Oxford tie for second place. Stanford University and the University of Cambridge share the fourth position. The University of California, Berkeley (6th), Princeton University (7th), and Yale University (9th) continue their long-standing reputations for influential research and academic leadership. Other leading US institutions including Caltech, UCLA, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and Cornell Universitya lso feature prominently in the top 20.

Asia’s top institutions strengthen global standing

Asian universities show remarkable progress, with China and Japan making significant gains. Tsinghua University ranks eighth, the highest in Asia, followed by the University of Tokyo (10th) and Peking University (11th). Singapore’s National University of Singapore (19th) further demonstrates Asia’s rising influence in global higher education.

ETH Zurich (12th) and Imperial College London (14th) reinforce Europe’s continued excellence in science and technology.
