IIM Bangalore placement panel resigns over rollback of recruitment rule

A 20-member placement committee at IIM Bangalore resigned after the institute revoked a rule that had offered special benefits to senior placement representatives. Their resignation suspends all placement related support ahead of final interviews. IIMB has initiated an internal review stressing that student well-being remains its top priority.

New Delhi: An entire 20-member student placement committee at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIMB)  resigned on Thursday. The unprecedented move follows the institute’s decision to withdraw a controversial recruitment clause that reportedly offered selective benefits to members of the panel.

The student placement committee announced its resignation through a formal communication addressed to IIMB’s Career Development Services (CDS) office and the student body.

Support for placement activities suspended

In the letter, the committee stated that its members had 'collectively resigned' and that support for all activities linked to the lateral and final placement processes 'stands suspended until further notice'. Pre-placement talks for the institute’s lateral and final recruitment cycles are typically held between December and February, and interviews for final placements are scheduled from February 4 to February 10.

At the centre of the controversy is a long-standing recruitment rule that limits the number of applications a student with a pre-placement offer (PPO) can submit for lateral and final placements. Until recently, this cap could be relaxed for 'senior placement representatives at the discretion of Career Development Services'. This exception, critics say provided an undue advantage to those serving on the committee.

IIM Bangalore initiates internal review

Career Development Services at IIMB are managed by 20 student representatives drawn from the Postgraduate Programme in Management (PGP) and the Postgraduate Programme in Business Analytics (PGPBA), under faculty supervision. The committee is responsible for managing the entire placement workflow inviting companies, conducting processes and ensuring seamless coordination.

In response to the resignations, IIMB released a statement noting that the issue was 'currently under internal review' as per the institute’s process framework. It added, 'Student well-being is paramount and central to the values which we uphold.'
