New Delhi: Filmmaker James Cameron’s highly-anticipated film, Avatar: Fire And Ice, has a new villain as the epic saga on Pandora continues. The makers on Tuesday (July 22), introduced Varang, a new villain in the Avatar universe. The character is portrayed by the actor Oona Chaplin.
The makers unveiled the first poster of the film featuring Varang and it has already gone viral on social media. Varang is described as the leader of the Mangkwan Clan or Ash People. The movie, directed by James Cameron, will have its first trailer release in theatres attached with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The makers unveiled the first look of Varang from Avatar: Fire And Ash. Na’vi inhabit the fiery regions near volcanoes, adding a new dimension to Pandora’s diverse environment. The new dimension in the Pandora added to the diverse environment in the Avatar universe. The first poster shows Varang in a striking red and black headdress as she traverse a volcanic landscape, wielding a flamethrower.
The film is scheduled to release on December 19, 2025.
Meanwhile, the first trailer of the film was recently shown at Disney’s Los Angeles and New York offices, according to New York Times report. In an interview with Empire, director James Cameron shared, “Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil. One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic. We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm.”
The first Avatar was released in 2009 and revolves around Paraplegic Marine Jake Sully who joins Avatar program, which allows humans to control genetically engineered Na’vi bodies. The second movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, focuses on Sully family’s life in exile. The movie, released in 2022, broke several box office records. The films star Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet, among others.
