‘Deepfakes a serious threat’, says Chiranjeevi

Hyderabad: Popular Telugu film actor Chiranjeevi termed deepfakes as a ‘serious threat’ to the society at Rashtriya Ekta Diwas event in Hyderabad.

He stated that DGP Shivdhar Reddy, Hyderabad CP VC Sajjanar are taking strict action with Sajjanar personally monitoring the situation.

“Our police system is strong. People need not fear deepfakes or cybercrimes. DGP and CP Sajjanar have taken this matter seriously. Efforts are being made to bring a law on this and I definitely want it to happen,” Chiranjeevi said.

He participated in a ‘run for unity’ event organised by Hyderabad Police on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Iron man of India and architect of a United India Sardar Vallabhai Patel. His birth anniversary is being celebrated as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’.

DGP Shivdhar Reddy said that the event is more than a run and that people must commit to national unity. He further stated the police are working hard to maintain law and order in the state. CP Sajjanar clarified that the public need not fear cyber crimes and that the deep fake problem is being dealt in a serious manner.

The actor’s statement comes a few days after he filed a complaint with Cyber crime police after AI generated pornographic deepfake videos of him were circulated online. He said that fabricated videos of him violated his constitutional rights of privacy and dignity.
