Dhanashree Verma breaks silence on Yuzvendra Chahal's viral 'Be your own sugar daddy' moment

New Delhi: Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal’s ex-wife Dhanashree Verma has finally broken silence over her divorce from him. She even addressed Yuzvendra’s viral T-shirt had words written, “Be your own sugar daddy”, a month after the cricketer first spoke publicly about his divorce.

Dhanashree Verma shared that if Yuzvendra wanted to convey something to her, he should have just told her in private rather than making a statement in public. She also admitted that she was taken aback by his statements.

In a podcast for Humans of Bombay on YouTube, Dhanashree Verma shared that she had an emotional breakdown in the court during the final divorce hearing. She recalled that she started to “howl in front of everybody and was just crying”. She added, “I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given. Even though we were so well-prepared mentally, I got so emotional. I started howling in front of everybody. I couldn't even express what I was feeling at that point. I just remember that I just kept crying, I was just howling and crying. Of course! All of that happened, and he (Chahal) walked out first.”

On the day of the final divorce hearing, Yuzvendra made headlines when he wore a T-shirt which read, “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy”. Reacting to the same, Dhanashree said, “You know that people are going to blame you. Before I had even known that this T-shirt stunt had happened, we were all aware that people were going to blame me for this."

She further revealed that she did see the videos of Chahal’s and said, “Are bhai, WhatsApp kar deta. T-shirt kyun pehna hai? (You could have WhatApp me. Why wear a T-shirt?”)

When asked about the constant trolled and being called an “ex” of successful cricketer, she shared, “People need to realize. You can't label the women always. People don't know what actually happened and they keep on commenting. Social media trolls do bother me sometimes. But if you talk about the bigger picture, it doesn't have an impact in the long run."

She also reacted to the rumours of faking her marriage with Yuzvendra Chahal and said, “There is a reason why we say 'personal life'. It has to be private. And look, a coin has two sides. Taali ek haath se to bajti nahi (You can't clap with one hand). Just because I am not speaking it doesn't give anyone the power to take advantage of that. It is not correct. I think it should not happen with anybody.”

She further added, “If you want to achieve great things, you don't have to address it again and again. I do have a lot to speak about it, I have my side of my story, do I want to delve into that? No. Do I wish to delve into that? Maybe, in the future.”

Dhanashree and Yuzvendra met during the COVID-19 pandemic and tied the knot in December 2020. They separated in June 2022 and filed a joint petition in family court seeking divorce on February 5, 2022. They were granted divorce in March 2025.
