New Delhi: It is believed that even after his divorce, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan maintains a healthy relationship with both his ex-wives, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. In 2024, Kiran was even seen enthusiastically participating in the wedding celebrations of Reena and Aamir's daughter, Ira Khan. But did you know that convincing her parents about her decision to marry Aamir wasn't easy for Kiran?
In March 2025, Kiran told ANI that her parents were taken aback when she informed them about her decision to marry Aamir. "In my parents' eyes, I had a lot of promise, and I was someone who wanted to do a lot of things. For them, I was always, in some ways, a star. Somebody with a lot of energy and potential," she said.
Kiran further said that her parents were worried she might be overshadowed. "When you marry someone who is incredibly successful and famous, some part of your identity inevitably gets lost. There's no denying that. And it took me a very long time to earn my own identity back," she added.
Kiran was born on November 7, 1973, in Hyderabad. She is a renowned filmmaker who has delivered several critically acclaimed films in Bollywood. You will be amazed to know that Kiran worked as Ashutosh Gowariker's assistant in Aamir's superhit film Lagaan. Later, she went on to produce films like Dangal, Secret Superstar, Talaash, and Laal Singh Chaddha. As a director, she helmed the 2010 film Dhobi Ghat. Recently, she made headlines for her latest directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies, which received widespread acclaim globally.
Aamir first married Reena in 1986. However, the duo separated after 16 years. During the filming of Lagaan, Aamir and Kiran reportedly grew close. The two eventually tied the knot in 2005 and welcomed their son, named Azad Rao Khan, through surrogacy in 2011. However, they decided to part ways in 2021.
