New Delhi: Without any prior announcement, Thug Life began streaming on Netflix and is now available in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Despite being one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year, Thug Life has now shifted to Netflix, just two days before completing a month since it was released in theatres.
Despite a long and intensive marketing run starting November of last year, including a relatively successful trailer launch and a two-episode talk-series, Thug Life has faced a particularly disappointing run at the theatres.
Against a production and marketing budget projected to be around Rs 200-300 crores, the movie managed to earn just Rs 92.75 crores. This is after Kamal Haasan’s controversial remarks wherein he said that Kannada “was born out of Tamil” and faced significant backlash.
The film boasts of many big names being associated with it like Silambarasan TR, Ashok Selvan, Trisha Krishnan and Ali Fazal among others. Thug Life represents a rarity in the sense that it is a Mani Ratnam film that failed at the box office. This continues Bollywood's ‘thug curse’ with films having the word ‘thug’ in their name underperforming heavily (read Thugs of Hindostan). Music for the film was composed by A R Rahman.
The movie follows Rangaraaya Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan), a notorious mafia don in New Delhi who is seeking redemption and revenge after he was tricked by his brother Rangaraaya Manickam (Nassar) and the man he raised, Amaran (Silambarasan TR).
