New Delhi: In the run-up to the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, rebranded as The New Avengers, has finally made its way to OTT platforms. The film, featuring a rag-tag group of anti-heroes, is currently not available in India. But, it is reportedly expected to be open for rent on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV soon.

The movie was released in theatres on May 2, but underperformed at the box office worldwide, earning $381.49 million. Reports suggest that this seemingly decent haul was not enough to break even, a figure estimated to be around $500 million and may have resulted in a potential loss for Disney.

However, the film was received well by critics, with many appreciating the emotionally grounded narrative while still having action and humour one would expect from a good Marvel film. Indian collections were also steady, amassing Rs 17 crore in the first week, even after being affected by releasing alongside popular Indian titles like Retro and Raid 2.

Thunderbolts* depicts some major changes in Marvel’s productions. Its protagonists are more flawed and lie in morally grey areas. The story is more character-driven and explores the relationship between the team. Generally good performances from everyone on the cast, which features beloved names like Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and David Harbour also contributed to praise from fans and critics alike. Significantly, after facing flak for shoddy CGI work over some earlier Marvel releases, director Jake Schreier has opted for shifting away from reliance on digital effects and has embraced practical effects and stunts instead.

The OTT release may offer a redemption for the film, and for the positive reviews to translate into monetary success. Nevertheless, there’s no doubt that Thunderbolts* represents a shift in Marvel’s storytelling.
