Indore: Two Australian women cricketers were allegedly stalked and molested by a bike-borne man in Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Thursday. The incident took place on Thursday when the cricketers, who are in India for the ICC Women's World Cup 2025, were returning to their hotel from a cafe on Thursday.
The 30-year-old accused, identified as Aqeel, a resident of Khajrana area, was arrested after a case was filed against him based on the women players' complaint.
Accused stalked cricketers, made lewd gestures
According to the complaint, the accused stalked the two players, made obscene gestures, and even tried to grab one of them. The women cricketers immediately sounded an alert through SOS notification. Alarmed by their notification, security officers arrived at the scene.
Danny Simmons, Australia team's security manager, lodged a complaint at the MIG police station on Thursday evening. "Our players were walking a short distance to a nearby cafe. Around 11 am, they sent me an SOS alert that a man was following them and trying to grab them. Both the players were escorted back to their hotel and did not sustain any physical injuries," he said in his written complaint.
Swift action: Case registered, accused arrested
Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered under Sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), equivalent to outraging the modesty of a woman. Police subsequently arrested the accused after examining the CCTV footage of the area.
The female cricketers have come to India along with other players of the Australian women's team at for the ICC Women's World Cup. They were staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel along with their squad.
