Why did the IPS officer die by suicide?
IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch officer, shot himself at his Sector 11 Chandigarh residence on October 7. He left behind a suicide note of eight pages in which Kumar accused his senior officers of "mental harassment." Previously, his wife, Amneet P Kumar, an Indian Administrative Service officer, registered a police complaint accusing the two officers of subjecting her husband to "caste-based slurs" and demanded their immediate arrest.
What is his wife saying?
His wife, Amneet P Kumar, an IAS officer herself, has named DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Narendra Bijarnia, Superintendent of Police of Rohtak, in her complaint. She accused both officers of abetment to suicide. She demanded that both officers should also be charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
She has demanded their immediate arrest because the officers were powerful and would try to influence the probe and derail justice. In her complaint, she said, "I am not only pleading for my family, but for the value of every honest officer's life and dignity. This is not a case of ordinary suicide but a direct result of systematic persecution of my husband, an officer from the SC community, by powerful and high-ranking officers who have used their positions to mentally torture him, ultimately driving him to such an extent that he was left with no other option but to take his life."
