New Delhi: In a shocking case reported from Madhya Pradesh's capital, Bhopal, a doctor who was currently serving as an assistant professor in the Emergency and Trauma Department at AIIMS Bhopal, has died due to anesthesia overdose. The lady doctor was identified as Dr Rashmi Verma.

Lady doctor injected herself with anesthesia medicine

According to a report in India Today, Verma injected herself with an anesthesia injection. The dose she took was reportedly much above the prescribed limit of the medicine. The incident happened on December 11, when she returned to her home after completing her duty.

Soon after taking the medicine, her condition deteriorated. Her family members, including her husband rushed her to AIIMS Bhopal. The doctors at the hospital said that by the time she reached the hospital, her heart had already stopped functioning. It had stopped exactly 7 minutes before she was admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital, said doctors.

The doctors at AIIMS then began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). After 3 rounds of CPR they finally managed to restore her heartbeat, but oxygen supply to her brain had already stopped and this led to considerable brain damage. An MRI examination revealed that the doctor had suffered global hypoxic brain injury, which refers to injuries to the brain caused due to continuous lack of oxygen, for a long period of time. This condition is almost always fatal, said doctors.

Verma remained on ventilator support for 24 days, following her admission to the multi-speciality hospital. However despite the best medical care and round the clock monitoring by doctors, her condition did not improve. Verma died on January 5 at 11 am. Her body has been handed over to her family.

Suicide note recovered: Police

The police recovered a suicide note from the residence of the lady doctor. In her note, Verma said that she was herself responsible for her death and that no one should be blamed for her demise. The police however have sent the note to a handwriting expert, to ascertain that it was indeed written by Verma herself and that there is no foul play involved.

ACP Aditi Bhavsar said that investigations were ongoing in the case, but family members have not made any allegations against anybody. She added that a case of unnatural death has been registered and the post-mortem report will help establish further details.

According to Verma's family members, she was under emotional stress. They claimed that she had also been suffering from depression following her father's death. They dismissed any job-related stress on the woman doctor.

The woman's husband, Dr Manmohan Shakya, is an orthopaedic specialist. He was the one who brought her to AIIMS in an unconscious state.
