Air India sends relief flight to Mongolia to bring back 228 stranded passengers

Air India's flight AI174, operating from San Francisco to Delhi via Kolkata, was diverted after a possible technical issue was detected mid-air. It landed at Ulaanbaatar as a precautionary measure.

New Delhi: In a bid to bring back 228 passengers stuck in Mongolia's Ulaanbaatar, Air India is going to operate a relief flight on Tuesday. Earlier, on Monday, the airline's San Francisco–Delhi flight was diverted due to a technical glitch.

When will the flight depart from India?

According to Air India, the special relief flight, designated AI183, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, was scheduled to depart from Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. It is supposed to bring back the stranded passengers to India on Wednesday morning.

Air India's flight AI174, operating from San Francisco to Delhi via Kolkata, was diverted after a possible technical issue was detected mid-air. It landed at Ulaanbaatar as a precautionary measure. The aircraft was carrying 245 people, including 228 passengers and 17 crew members.

A spokesperson of the airlines said, “Air India will be operating a relief flight to ferry the passengers of flight AI174 (San Francisco–Delhi on November 2), which was diverted to Ulaanbaatar on Monday. The ferry flight AI183 is scheduled to depart Delhi this afternoon and return with the affected passengers on Wednesday morning."

The airlines has worked closely with local authorities and the Indian Embassy in Mongolia to help everyone on board the flight, including arranging hotels for them. The Boeing 777 aircraft is being checked in Ulaanbaatar and will be flown back separately once it gets clearance. Notably, in 2023, an Air India flight landed in Russia's Magadan as a precautionary measure due to a technical issue.
