Amid tariff row, India Post suspends all mail services to US

With no clarity, airlines and courier companies stopped accepting India Post consignments bound for the US after August 25. Initially, it was believed letters, documents and low-value gift items would still move, but these too have now been halted.

The suspension follows new rules introduced by the US administration and the inability of Indian postal carriers to comply with them.

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing tariff dispute between India and the United States, India Post has suspended all categories of mail services to America, including letters, documents, parcels and even gifts worth up to $100.

Announcing the move on X, India Post said: "Booking of all categories of mail to the United States of America has been suspended until further notice due to carrier unavailability & undefined regulatory mechanisms." It added that customers with undelivered consignments could claim postage refunds and assured that efforts were being made to restore services at the earliest.

New rules introduced by US administration

According to reports, the suspension follows new rules introduced by the US administration and the inability of Indian postal carriers to comply with them. On July 30, 2025, the US issued an order removing duty exemptions on goods worth up to $800. From August 29, every parcel entering the US became liable for customs duties.

A second order the same day mandated that goods over $100 be subject to customs tax, to be collected only by agencies authorised by US Customs. While guidelines were issued on August 15, several issues remain unclear, including who will collect the duties and how the process will work.

Indians left scrambling for alternatives

With no clarity, airlines and courier companies stopped accepting India Post consignments bound for the US after August 25. Initially, it was believed letters, documents and low-value gift items would still move, but these too have now been halted.

The decision has left thousands of Indians who regularly send documents and gifts to relatives in the US scrambling for alternatives, forcing many to turn to private couriers. The government said it is closely monitoring the situation, but the services are unlikely to resume until both countries reach an understanding on customs and data-sharing mechanisms.
