'Assam CM is most corrupt in India, he will be jailed': Rahul Gandhi attacks Himanta Biswa Sarma

Addressing party workers at an event in Chhaygaon during his one-day visit aimed at energising the cadre ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, Gandhi said: "He thinks he is a king, but he won't remain in power for long. He is the most corrupt in India—and very soon, Congress's lions will send him to jail. The fear is clearly visible in his eyes, because neither Modi nor Shah will be able to save him now!"

New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Guwahati on Wednesday, accusing him of "behaving like a king" and asserting that he would land in jail. He also termed Sarma as most corrupt CM in India.

He said the people of Assam know the truth, and expressed confidence that the Congress will win the upcoming elections. "We have formed a new team here. They’ve begun working, and the results will soon be visible," Gandhi added. Assam will go to polls in 2026.

Gandhi also accused the BJP of manipulating elections by altering voter lists. Citing the Maharashtra assembly election results, he said, "The BJP used voter list revisions to fraudulently win in Maharashtra. They are trying to do the same in Bihar."

He emphasised that the country is currently witnessing a battle between two ideologies: "The RSS's ideology of hatred and violence versus the Congress's ideology of truth and non-violence." Gandhi also claimed that, "Today, there are two Indias -- one belonging to a few billionaires who host lavish weddings, and another of common people who are crushed under the burden of taxes."

Sarma hits back

Responding to Rahul's remarks, Sarma in a post on social media platform X, said: "Write it down, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail’ — this is the exact sentence that the Leader of Opposition, Shri Rahul Gandhi, said in his closed meeting with the Congress’s political affairs committee in Assam."

He then took a dig at Rahul by pointing out that the LoP is out on bail in several criminal cases across the country. "My best wishes to you. Enjoy the hospitality of Assam for the rest of the day," his post read further.

Rahul arrived in Assam with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and held two meeting with party leaders as part of preparations for the 2026 assembly elections. Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi said the discussions were focused on strengthening the party and planning for future electoral challenges.
