Dehradun: These days, entertainment companies are exploring new ways to offer fun and frolic to the public. One such idea is a ‘fake wedding’—a staged marriage ceremony with all traditional rituals, designed purely for entertainment and to recreate the festive atmosphere of a real wedding.
In this sequence, a proposed event titled “Band Baaja Baarat – Fake Wedding” was cancelled by Dehradun Police on Thursday after receiving complaints that it could hurt religious sentiments, especially those related to Hindu marriage traditions. The event was scheduled to take place at the Mall of Dehradun on September 6, but was called off following public objections and police intervention.
Event was a mockery of sacred rituals
The protest was led by several local organizations that claimed that the event was a mockery of sacred rituals and could disturb social harmony. They approached the police, demanding action to stop the program before it could take place.
Police issued a formal cancellation of the event
Responding swiftly, the Nehru Colony Police Station took the matter seriously and issued a formal cancellation of the event. The organizers were summoned and given strict instructions regarding future conduct. Police made it clear that any attempt to hurt religious or communal sentiments would not be tolerated.
The police laid out five clear conditions for the organizers:
No event should be held that hurts religious or community feelings, public peace and social harmony must be respected at all times, safety standards, crowd control, and administrative rules must be strictly followed, only cultural and entertainment-based programs should be organized, prior permission from the administration is mandatory for any public event.

The organizers were warned that legal action would be taken if any of these conditions were violated in the future. The police emphasized that maintaining peace and respect for all communities is a top priority, especially in a city like Dehradun where people from diverse backgrounds live together.
Senior officials said that while creativity and entertainment are welcome, they must not cross the line into insensitivity or disrespect. The police also urged event planners across the city to be mindful of cultural values and avoid themes that could trigger public outrage.
