He is likely to outline the government’s plans to improve transparency and bring new changes to the election process.
In the Rajya Sabha, BJP president and House leader JP Nadda will close the debate on ‘Vande Mataram’, bringing an energetic end to the cultural discussion there. After that, focus will shift to the crucial debate on election reforms starting Thursday.
The winter session of Parliament began on December 1 and will continue till December 19.
The Punjab Police on Wednesday said it has dismantled a highly organised cross-border drug network with the arrest of three men linked to handlers in Pakistan and abroad. Officers seized over 4 kg of ICE (methamphetamine) and 1 kg of heroin. Investigations revealed WhatsApp-based coordination, drone-assisted drops and foreign handlers. The accused operated as couriers, retrieving and distributing drug consignments, police said.
A 30-year-old man from Varanasi’s Lohata area died by suicide on Wednesday, leaving a video accusing his wife, her lover and his mother-in-law of harassment, police said. Rahul Mishra alleged his wife was in an extramarital relationship. After his mother filed a complaint, the three were booked for abetment of suicide, DCP Neetu Kadyan said.
The Delhi government on Wednesday signed an MoU with IOCL to beautify and maintain five major flyovers and a key Aurobindo Marg stretch. The pact also includes MRI and CT machines for LNJP Hospital, a high-energy linear accelerator for Delhi State Cancer Institute, eight water ATMs, DTC depot beautification, three modern energy hubs and eco-branding for 250 electric buses. A violent clash erupted in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh on Wednesday after farmers used tractors to demolish the boundary wall of an under-construction ethanol plant. The crowd vandalised vehicles and set some ablaze, prompting police to fire tear gas and use lathis. Congress MLA Abhimanyu Poonia was injured and hospitalised. Five people, including a couple and their children, were killed when an SUV hit a stationary hatchback on the Purvanchal Expressway in Barabanki’s Haidergarh area on Wednesday, police said. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a debate on electoral reforms, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that on 5 November 2025, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi had “defused a hydrogen bomb” in his press conference by claiming that 501 votes were cast from a single house in Haryana. Shah said the Election Commission has already clarified the matter and confirmed that neither the house nor the voters mentioned in the claim were fake.
While speaking in the Lok Sabha on SIR, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said no democracy can be safe if “infiltrators decide who becomes the country’s Prime Minister or a state’s Chief Minister.” He said the SIR exercise is simply meant to clean and verify the voter list. According to him, some political parties are opposing it only because it affects their political interests. Shah added that he “sympathises” with such parties because the public does not vote for them and now even the “few infiltrators who supported them will be removed from the rolls.”
"Still believe Parliament cannot discuss SIR as it is in domain of Election Commission. The poll body is conducting the exercise as it is its Constitutional mandate," Amit Shah said.
The Delhi government has signed an MoU with IOCL to maintain and beautify areas beneath five flyovers as part of the oil major’s CSR work, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said. The initiative will cover four sites in south Delhi and one in Punjabi Bagh, along with support for medical equipment, water ATMs, and energy centres. The Mumbai police have registered an FIR against two persons for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad and using abusive language targeting the Muslim community on a social media platform, an official said on Tuesday according to news agency PTI.
