Bulandshahr riot case: 38 convicted for violence, Inspector's murder over alleged cow slaughter

Meerut: All the 38 accused in the 2018 Bulandshahr violence case were convicted by a court in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. An inspector and a local youth were killed in the violence triggered by cow slaughter rumours in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh in 2018.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ)-12 Gopal found five of the accused guilty under the erstwhile IPC section 302 (murder), while the remaining 33 were convicted under rioting, arson and other charges. Those who have been found guilty of killing the Inspector include Prashant Nat, David, Johnny, Rahul, Lokendra Mama. The court has scheduled the sentencing for August 1.

On December 2018, a violence broke out after the cattle carcasses were found in Mahav village of Bulandshahr's Syana area. During the violence, the mob set the Chingrawathi police post on fire. The police station was also pelted with stones. During the violence, the then SHO Inspector Subodh Kumar, who was posted at Siyana police station, and 20-year-old died. Subodh Kumar sustained fatal gunshot injuries while trying to control the mob and the youth, Sumit Kumar was killed in firing.

Following the unrest, an FIR was registered against 27 individuals and 50-60 unidentified persons under various sections including murder, arson, rioting, criminal conspiracy and sedition. A chargesheet was filed against 44 people. However, the charges were proven against 38 individuals of the 44 named in the chargesheet, according to Special Public Prosecutor Yashpal Singh Raghav. While five accused died during the course of the trial, one is being tried in a juvenile court as he was a minor at the time of the incident.
