Indore: A sub-inspector (SI) posted in Indore was brutally beaten by residents of the Khajrana area on Thursday morning after he was found inside a woman’s house under suspicious circumstances. The cop, identified as Suresh Bunkar, is now suspended, and both departmental and legal action is being taken against him.

The incident took place around 6 am. According to Times Of India reports, the woman is currently involved in a marital dispute with her husband. SI Bunkar had reportedly been in touch with her for the past two months. Locals, including the woman’s family members and neighbours, were angered by his presence and accused him of being drunk and misbehaving.

Eyewitnesses claimed that a group of men and women caught the cop inside the woman’s home. He was beaten with sticks, his clothes were torn, and some even tried to strip him and tie him to an electric pole. Videos of the incident were recorded and circulated on social media.

When a team from the Khajrana police station reached the spot, they faced resistance from the crowd and couldn’t rescue Bunkar. Later, additional police force had to be called from Palasia’s control room to take control of the situation and rescue him safely.

Additional Superintendent of Police Amrendra Singh said that the video showing SI Bunkar’s behaviour pointed to serious misconduct. He said the officer’s actions violated police service rules and were not acceptable. As a result, Bunkar has been suspended and departmental disciplinary action has begun. Singh also added that legal action will be taken against those who assaulted the officer, as taking the law into one's own hands is also a crime.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kundan Mandloi told The Times of India that a case is also being registered against SI Bunkar.
