New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing allegations of evidence tampering and a possible wider conspiracy in the high profile rape and murder case of a medical student at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The revelation came in the CBI's fifth status report submitted to the Sealdah court.
The only accused, so far, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. The CBI has also indicated that there may have been attempts to manipulate the evidence.
In the fifth report, the CBI has stated that there was a plausible attempt to tamper with the evidence in its initial stages. The agency is also investigating whether there was a coordinated effort to mislead the investigation and to gradually hush up the issue. This investigation also includes the scrutiny of how the crime scene was handled and the tampering of evidence thereafter.
Seven witnesses have been questioned in the ongoing probe, and the CBI has made clear that their focus is not just limited to the primary accused. The agency has been scanning CCTV footage, call records, and forensic data to piece together the full sequence of events and determine if any lapses occurred.
The report stated, "200 post incident news clippings, images and videos has been scrutinised to detect any actionable information."
Public pressure led the Calcutta High Court to order a CBI probe after questions were raised regarding the initial police investigation. Earlier this month, a city court rejected a petition filed by the victim's parents for allowing their lawyer to visit the crime scene. The victim's family has previously expressed concerns that all the culprits involved in the incident have not yet been brought to justice. Meanwhile, junior doctors will be holding a night long torch rally to mark one year of the crime on the intervening night of August 8-9th.
