Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs in India had confirmed that the "visa regime" for Chinese nationals is now fully functional. India has been issuing visas for tourism and business purposes for Chinese. The visa services have been resumed after a 5-year-suspension, following the border clashes in Galwan in 2020.
MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, was quoted by the Economic Times as saying, "Visas for tourists are being given to Chinese nationals and business visas were being given earlier. So you know, all those visas are now in place. The visa regime of tourism and business, etc, is fully functional."
India had officially resumed issuing visas for Chinese nationals in November 2025. Before that, in July 2025, they started a limited reopening of visas for Chinese nationals across the world, hoping to travel to India. In fact even before the announcement by the MEA, business visas were being issued to Chinese nationals. This remains in place as of today, too.
The resumption of visas by both countries is a part of "people-centric" confidence-building measures agreed upon by both sides in 2025. Earlier both sides decided to resume flights in October 2025 and also the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which was an annual event before the 2020 pandemic and clashes at the border.
