New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a 26-year-old man after his speeding Mahindra Thar ran over two pedestrians in the city's Chanakyapuri area. He was later found to be carrying a stash of narcotics.
The accused, identified as Ashish Bachchas from Shakarpur in East Delhi, was apprehended at the scene on Sunday morning. Police said Bachchas, an unemployed former driver, is a drug addict and supplier. His medical examination confirmed that he was under the influence at the time of the crash.
A search of the Uttar Pradesh-registered SUV has shown evidence of commercial quantities of cocaine (0.30 gm) LSD (2.6 gm) MD (23.47 gm), cannabis (21.26 gm), charas (4.17 gm), along with tobacco (15.49 gm), Rs 25,000 in cash, and a mobile phone. An empty liquor bottle was also recovered from the vehicle.
The accident occurred around 6:30 am near Gate Number 3 of Talkatora Stadium. One victim, identified as Sujesh Kshetri from Sikkim, died on arrival at AIIMS Trauma Centre. The other, who is yet to be identified, died from injuries later in the day.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla said a passerby alerted police after spotting the two men lying unconscious and bleeding. The SUV had also crashed into a pole.
According to reports, Bachchas had celebrated Raksha Bandhan with his family in Shakarpur on Saturday before heading to Gurugram. The fatal accident occurred as he was returning home. The vehicle had also been fined or over speeding on August 1, with a pending fine of Rs 2,000.
A case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Chanakyapuri police station. The vehicle has been impounded and further investigations are underway.
