New Delhi: After five days of repeated adjournments, a consensus was reached following an all-party meeting held today. It will enable Lok Sabha to function normally from Monday. The breakthrough came after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla convened the meeting at around 12.30pm in the Parliament complex.
The ongoing opposition protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls has led to repeated disruptions in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, stalling legislative business throughout the week.
On Thursday, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi joined opposition MPs in a protest outside the Parliament building. Protesters raised slogans and held placards criticising the Election Commission's SIR exercise.
The protest continued on Friday as INDIA bloc MPs, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, and party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staging a demonstration at the Parliament complex. The opposition MPs again reiterated their demand for transparency in the revision process.
Speaking to reporters, Kharge said, "We are fighting against that only — the Special Intensive Revision exercise."
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra while attacking the EC exercise added, "They should respond to the allegations. They should provide us with the voters' list, which we have been asking for. There should be transparency. This is a democracy. All political parties should have access to that information. Why is it not being provided?"
