New Delhi: High drama was witnessed outside Election Commission of India office in New Delhi as Opposition leaders take out march over alleged irregularities in the voter roll revision or Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. Latest reports suggest Delhi Police detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the march to EC office.
Over 300 Opposition MPs participated in march with Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader also taking part in the march. Akhilesh Yadav was also seen jumping the barricade as the protesting leaders were denied permission to take out the march.
Protests after Rahul Gandhi's 'vote chori' charge
The Opposition leaders who participated included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, among other leaders from DMK. The protest march was taken out from Parliament to Election Commission of India office over the alleged poll fraud and voter list revision. The leaders were prevented from moving further and ere stopped near Transport Bhawan.
Last week, Rahul Gandhi gave a presentation and alleged that elections were stolen in states like Maharashtra through vote rigging.
SIR and 'Vote Chori'
The Opposition leader wore 'vote chori' and 'SIR' caps as they raised slogans against the Bihar voter list revision. The protesting leaders also sang national anthem just before taking out the march.
Shashi Tharoor reacts
"The issue is very simple. Rahul Gandhi has raised some serious questions, they deserve serious answers. The Election Commission of India not only has a responsibility to the nation, but it has a responsibility to itself that there should not be any doubts left in the minds of the public about this entire credibility of our elections," Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told media during the protest march.
BJP lashes out at Congress
Meanwhile, BJP leader and Union Minister has attacked the Congress and said that the party has resorted to 'throwing mud and running away' approach. He also said that Congress is rattled due to poll losses successively.
TMC MP faints during detention
Meanwhile, during protest march towards the Election Commission’s office, TMC MP Mitali Bag fainted. Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, assisted her and helped her get into a car. The march was stopped by police at Sansad Marg.
