Delhi Police arrest one suspect in theft of kalash worth Rs 1 crore from Red Fort

Delhi Police arrested a suspect in Uttar Pradesh for the theft of a Rs 1 crore urn from the Red Fort's 15 August Park during a Jain ceremony. CCTV footage led to the arrest.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Crime Branch have arrested the accused in the case of theft of an urn worth Rs 1 crore from the 15 August Park in the Red Fort complex in the national capital.

The arrest was made in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur based on CCTV footage. The interrogation by the police revealed that the accused stole not one but three urns. While the police have recovered one urn, they are conducting raids to recover more items stolen.

The theft took place inside the Red Fort complex during an ongoing Jain religious ceremony. The perpetrators stole a sacred vessel worth almost Rs 1 crore. Businessman Sudhir Jain brought the kalash for daily worship, and it disappeared from the stage while Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was present as a guest of honour.

The kalash was reportedly made of 760 grams of gold and has 150 grams of diamonds, rubies and emeralds. During a Jain ritual on September 2, it was stolen. On September 6, Delhi Police disclosed details of the case after examining CCTV footage showing the suspect’s movements. The police informed, "Last Tuesday, it disappeared from the stage in the middle of the program. The suspect's activities have been captured in CCTV footage."

Temple manager Punit Kumar Jain said the same suspect has been linked to several other thefts at Jain temples in Delhi in recent years. He said, “The financial value may be immense, but spiritually, the vessel is priceless for us."
