New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has taken a jibe at the UK for the theft of a Mumbai influencer's bike in England's Nottingham.
When a social media post asked him to comment on the incident, Tharoor took to X and wrote, "They're learning from the British Museum!" The former diplomat is known for his swipes at the erstwhile British Raj. In the latest comment, the erudite politician was referring to the reputation of the British Museum in London for 'collecting' items from other countries. Notably, it has a huge collection of Indian artefacts.
Yogesh Alekari is a 33-year-old Mumbai-based influencer who started a solo world tour on his KTM bike in May. He covered 17 nations and 24,000 kilometres before reaching the UK, and he was supposed to go to Africa from there. However, on August 28, his bike got stolen in Nottingham, along with his passport, money, and some documents that he kept on the two-wheeler.
He told the BBC, "I was in Nottingham for a biker event and was about to head to Oxford. I stopped and parked my bike at Wollaton Park. I locked the bike up, and it was a busy area with children playing, so I thought it seemed like a safe place. I crossed the road and went to have breakfast, but within an hour, I came back and everything was just gone."
He urged his followers, who number over 1,80,000 on Instagram and over 16,000 on Facebook, to help him find the bike. Alekari said, "I was totally shocked. I just broke down and started crying when I realised what had happened. They stole my motorcycle, but this wasn't only a motorbike - it was my home, it was my dream, it was my everything as a traveller." The police have not traced the motorbike so far.
