The Singapore Police's statement comes after some media reports claimed that Zubeen Garg was encouraged to jump into the sea during a yacht party by one of the accused despite knowing that he was drunk.
New Delhi: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Friday ruled out any foul play in singer Zubeen Garg’s death and cautioned against spreading unverified information and any kind of speculation. In a statement, the Singapore Police said that it has not found anything suspicious in the singer's death so far.
Garg, a popular singer from Assam, died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore while swimming in the sea on September 19. He had gone to the county for the North East India Festival (NEIF).
The Singapore Police's clarification comes after some media reports claimed that Garg was encouraged to jump into the sea during a yacht party by one of the accused despite knowing that he was drunk.
What Singapore police said in Zubeen's death probe report
In its statement, the Singapore Police Force said, it is aware of "online speculation regarding the circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s death, and that the Indian media has reported that a Special Investigation Team in India has charged four persons for the murder of Garg".
It also said that it does not suspect foul play in the death of Garg on the basis of its investigations so far and that the case is currently still being investigated by the SPF, in accordance with the Singapore Coroners Act 2010.
'Do not speculate or spread unverified details'
The SPF further said that it is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the case. "We seek the patience and understanding of the parties involved. Meanwhile, we urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information," it added.
"Upon completion of the SPF’s investigations, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner in Singapore, who will hold a Coroner’s Inquiry ("CI”). The CI is currently scheduled for January and February 2026. A CI is a fact-finding process led by the Coroner to establish the cause and circumstances of death. Its findings will be made public upon conclusion," the statement read.
SIT probing Zubeen Garg's death, names 7 as accused
In India, the Assam government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the case and it submitted the chargesheet on December 12, naming seven people as accused.
The SIT has charged NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer's secretary Siddhartha Sharma, and his two band members - Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta with murder in the chargesheet. Garg's cousin and suspended Assam Police officer Sandipan Garg has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while the singer's two PSOs have been charged with criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust by misappropriating funds or property entrusted to them.
