Nainital: Uttarakhand hill stations used to witness heavy snowfall in December and January, turning them into winter wonderlands that attracted tourists in large numbers. But amid dry weather, these beautiful places are now experiencing dry cold, leaving tourists disappointed.
The winter season in Nainital, Uttarakhand’s famous lake city, has also brought disappointment for tourists and locals alike. Visitors who arrived during New Year and the first weekend of January expected snowfall, but the weather remained dry and cold, with no snow in sight.
Tourists return without snow
Many tourists had planned their trips around the hope of witnessing Nainital’s snowy charm. Udit Jaiswal from Madhya Pradesh said he was eager to see snowfall but returned disappointed. He also admitted the scenery was beautiful and the weather cold, but the absence of snow dampened her excitement.
Priyanka, a tourist from Punjab visiting Nainital for the first time, shared that she enjoyed her trip, including a visit to Baba Neem Karoli’s Kainchi Dham. However, she too had hoped for snowfall. Priti, another visitor, echoed similar feelings, saying she loved Nainital’s beauty but was let down by the clear skies.
Businesses await snowfall
Tourism-related businesses are also feeling the impact. Narendra Singh Chauhan, Secretary of the Nainital Boat Owners Committee, explained that snowfall in January used to be common. It attracted large crowds, boosting local business. This year, however, there has been no rain or snow, only dry cold.
Chauhan pointed to global warming and climate change as reasons behind the changing weather pattern. He expressed hope that snowfall would eventually arrive, bringing relief to residents and reviving tourism.
Climate change effect
The Meteorological Department has predicted that January will remain almost dry, with little chance of snowfall. Experts say rising temperatures and climate change are altering traditional weather cycles in the Himalayas. This has left both tourists and locals waiting anxiously for the snow that defines Nainital’s winter charm.
Absence of snow has taken away the season’s magic
Residents say the city feels incomplete without snowfall. Narendra explained that while the lakes are calm and the greenery of the mountains is attracting visitors, the absence of snow has taken away the season’s magic. People are keeping their eyes on the sky, hoping for a sudden change in weather.
Visitors and locals continue to wait hopefully
For now, Nainital remains pleasant but cold, with tourists returning home disappointed and businesses waiting for the snow that once guaranteed prosperity. The city’s winter charm lies in its snowy blanket, and until it arrives, both visitors and locals continue to wait hopefully.
