New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will meet Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, on August 21, according to Reuters.
India and Russia have talked up their “strategic partnership” amid America's tariff bombardment. US President Donald Trump has imposed a total of 50 per cent tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil, which he claimed was fueling Putin's war in Ukraine. Notably. Trump has also imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Brazil and lower tariffs on several countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone. The latter briefed PM Modi on the latest developments in Ukraine. Thanking Putin for the update, PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
PM Modi took to X and wrote, "Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year."
In early August, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met Putin. Notably, the meeting took place just a day after Trump imposed the extra 25 per cent tariff on India, taking the total tariff to 50 per cent. Putin shook hands with Doval, but Russia did not provide any details of what transpired in the meeting.
As per Doval, Putin is going to come to India soon, and it may take place at the end of 2025. Doval said, "We are very excited and delighted to learn about the visit of President Putin to India. I think that the dates are almost finalised now."
Doval added, "You have very rightly mentioned that we have a very special relationship, a long relationship, and we highly value our strategic partnership. We have had high-level engagements, and these high-level engagements have contributed very substantially. We are very excited and delighted to learn about the visit of President Putin to India. I think that the dates are almost finalised now."
