Dehradun: India has unveiled a radically updated seismic zonation map under the new Earthquake Design Code, placing the entire Himalayan arc in Zone VI, the highest danger category. This marks the first time the Himalayan belt has been officially recognized as the most earthquake-prone region.
According to the new assessment, 61% of India now lies in moderate to high hazard zones, reshaping how the country must prepare for earthquakes. The updated map will directly influence building codes, infrastructure projects, and urban planning.

Dr Vineet Gehlaut, director of Wadia institute of Himalayan geology and former director of National centre of seismology and a scientist involved in the mapping project, explained: "This update reflects a scientific approach to seismic assessment. The Himalayan arc has always been vulnerable, but now it is formally recognized as the highest-risk zone. This will help enforce stronger safety standards.”

The government has emphasized that new building codes will be mandatory for all infrastructure projects in high-risk zones. This includes earthquake-resistant designs for schools, hospitals, bridges, and housing complexes.
Dr. Meera Joshi, a structural engineer, added: "Our infrastructure must meet stricter standards. The new code ensures that safety is built into every project. This is crucial for protecting lives in earthquake-prone regions.”
The seismic map also highlights risks in other parts of India. Cities like Delhi, Guwahati, and Srinagar fall under high-risk categories due to their proximity to fault lines.
