Exorbitant electricity bills trouble Kangana : Times when inflated power tariffs hit common man

There have been several incidents of people receiving inflated power bills. While actor Kangana Ranaut received a bill of Rs 1 lakh for her Manali house, another man also in Himachal Pradesh received an electricity bill of Rs 210 crore in January 2025. Similar cases have been reported from Delhi and Noida also.

New Delhi: Actor and Member of Parliament (MP) Kangana Ranaut recently claimed that she received power bills worth Rs 1 lakh for her home in Manali. The actor expressed shock at the whooping amount she was being asked to pay as she does not even live in that house. The actor condemned the Himachal Pradesh government and the state's electricity board for overcharging her. Here are some instances of people receiving inflated power bills for their homes across the country.

1. Kangana Ranaut's power bill for Manali house: The most recent case is actor Kangna Ranaut receiving power bills worth Rs 1 lakh for her house in Manali. After the actor claimed that the bills were exorbitantly high, the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board refuted the claims of overcharging her. They claimed that the bill amount was Rs 90,384 and the bill was for 2 months. They also said that the amount included pending arrears. They claimed that the actor-MP had not paid her bills since January 16. Not only that, the power department also accused her of delaying payments often.

The entire matter turned political after Himachal's PWD Minister, Vikramaditya Singh accused the Mandi MP of not paying bills on time and cursing the state government. He also called her "mischievous".

2. Farmers protest against Noida Power Company Limited: Farmers in Gautam Budh Nagar held a protest against Noida Power Company Limited in February 2025. They were protesting against inflated power bills, false power theft cases against them and harassment by company officials. Several farmers organisations like Kisan Sabha, Kisan Ekta Sangh, and Kisan Parishad carried out a sit-in protest against the power company.

The farmers were against installation of smart metres in their houses and wanted the government to charge them a fixed cost for the electricity. They claimed that smart metres were faulty and overcharged them for the electricity they used.

3. Man in Himachal Pradesh gets power bill worth Rs 210 crore: In a shocking case, reported from Himachal Pradesh, a man received an electricity bill of Rs 210 crore. When he approached the power department, officials were also shocked at the amount printed on the bill. Upon checking they found that the exorbitant amount was actually due to a technical error, on part of the department. The actual amount was just Rs 4,047. The incident happened in January 2025 in the Hamirpur Zone.

Delhi man shocked at receiving Rs 30,000 electricity bill: In June 2024 a man from Delhi took to social media platform Reddit to highlight the Rs 30,280 power bill he had received from BSES Rajdhani. The bill was for June of that year and needed to be paid by July 9. Even though the bill was for the peak summer season in the capital, it was still a little overboard.

5. Gurgaon businessman receives Rs 45,000 bill for 2 months: In yet another case reported from Delhi-NCR a man staying in Gurgaon received an electricity bill of RS 45,000. The man identified as Jasveer Singh, who is a co-founder of the Join Hood App, took to social media to share screenshots of the bill he had received from the electricity department. The bill was for a period of 2 months. The incident happened in June 2024 and the CEO had to reportedly pay up the amount to the electricity department.

6. Noida resident receives inflated bills: In another incident reported from Noida’s Sector 19 in 2015 the president of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) said a new metre was installed in his house in January that year. His bill for February was Rs 14,112, he claimed. This was when the average bill he had paid for the past 6 months was just Rs 6,700. In just 20 days the new meter recorded power consumption of 1,406 units, he complained.
