Haridwar: A major illegal factory producing fake shampoos of well-known brands like Clinic Plus and Sunsilk was busted in the Sidcul area of Haridwar on Saturday.
A joint team of Sidcul Police and the Drugs Department raided the site and arrested three people. One accused managed to escape from the spot. Police recovered fake goods and equipment worth around Rs 15 lakh.
Police conducted a raid on the house
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramod Singh Dobal, the police had received a tip-off from an informer about a fake shampoo manufacturing unit operating in a house located in Gangotri Enclave Phase-3, near Denso Chowk in Sidcul. Acting on the information, a team led by Station Officer (SO) Nitesh Sharma conducted a raid on the house.
As the police entered the premises, one man ran away by climbing onto the roof. However, the team managed to catch the other three suspects — Haseen Ahmed, Shahban, and Mohsin — all residents of Landhaura, Mangalore.
Police found a large quantity of fake shampoo bottles
During the search, the police found a large quantity of fake shampoo bottles, raw materials, packing machines, labels, and empty bottles. On inspecting the labels, it was found that these products were being sold under the name of Hindustan Unilever Limited, using the branding of Clinic Plus and Sunsilk.
The police immediately contacted Drug Inspector Harish Singh, who arrived at the spot along with the legal manager of Hindustan Unilever. After checking the recovered goods, they confirmed that all the items were fake and illegal.
They were running business without any valid license
Upon questioning, main accused Haseen Ahmed admitted that he was running the business without any valid license. He also failed to provide any documents related to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, raw materials, or the packaging of the products.
SHO Nitesh Sharma shared details of the items recovered from the site. These included four drums (approx. 1,350 liters) of raw shampoo material, one stainless steel filling machine, 800 empty bottles, 32 boxes of fake shampoo and numerous printed labels.
The packaging clearly showed the fake products being marketed as “Made in India” under Hindustan Unilever’s Sidcul address. In total, over 1,900 fake shampoo bottles were seized, including, 1134 bottles of 80 ml Clinic Plus, 240 bottles of 355 ml Clinic Plus, and 540 bottles of 180 ml Sunsilk.
Case has been registered against the accused
A case has been registered under Sections 316, 318, 61(2), and 63/65 of the Copyright Act. Sub Inspector Inder Singh has taken charge of the investigation and efforts are ongoing to catch the fourth accused who escaped.
This action was taken following directions from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who recently instructed strict action against all illegal manufacturing units in Uttarakhand. The local police had been actively gathering intelligence in the Sidcul area, which led to this successful raid.
