Ex-Punjab DGP, his ex-minister wife booked on murder charges after son found dead
An FIR was registered against the former Punjab DGP, his wife, daughter-in-law, and daughter under sections 103(1) and 61 of the IPC, after a complaint was lodged based on Akhtar's social media video.
New Delhi: Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, his wife and ex-minister Razia Sultana and two others have been booked, days after their son's death. Aakil Akhtar, 35, was found dead at his residence in Haryana's Panchkula on Friday. Months before his death, Akhtar shared a video on social media alleging his wife and his father had an affair.
An FIR was registered against the former Punjab DGP, his wife, daughter-in-law, and daughter under sections 103(1) and 61 of the IPC, after a complaint was lodged based on Akhtar's social media video. While Mustafa has been charged with the murder and criminal conspiracy, his wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law have been booked for participating in the conspiracy.
Family attributed death to drug overdose
Police had earlier said that the former DGP's son was found unconscious by his family and was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead. The family had initially attributed the death to a drug overdose. Initially, police did not suspect any foul play and handed over the body to the family after the post-mortem examination.
Big U-turn after video surfaces
However, the case took a dramatic U-turn after Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla in Punjab, lodged a police complaint and submitted a video posted by Akhtar in August, in which he levelled serious allegations against his family members and expressed apprehension about threat to his life. Akhtar claimed that that his father had illicit relations with his wife.
Akhtar's father, Mohammad Mustafa, was a 1985 batch IPS officer. He retired from the post of DGP in 2021 and later took a political plunge and joined the Congress party. He has also served as an advisor to Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu.
What Aakil said in video
In his 16-minute-11-second video, Akhtar said that he learnt about his father and wife's affair a year and a half ago. "I should have known about it earlier. However, in 2018, a year after our marriage, I caught him near the dressing room, but he ran away," he said. He further said that his father had him legally detained. "I'm under a lot of mental pressure. I feel like they'll file a false case again today. They have already tried it once. They filed a false FIR in one case," he said.
He further said, "I was forcibly put in a rehab center, even though I had already been to one. I was completely clean. I wasn't drunk, and I wasn't even taken to a doctor. When I shared my feelings at the rehab center, my family found out. They took me out. Two or three months later, in June, my family accused me of having connections with gangsters."
