New Delhi: Five Bangladeshi students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, Assam, suspended for their alleged involvement in violent clashes on campus, will be deported. The students were enrolled under scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
The third-year students were allegedly involved in a violent altercation with fourth-year students, also from Bangladesh on September 8. "We have enough evidence to establish that they were actively involved in campus violence and have been suspended for two semesters," NIT Director Dilip Kumar Baidya told news agency PTI. He added that all five students will be sent back to Bangladesh.
"We investigated the matter thoroughly and suspended the five students for an academic year. They have also been expelled from the hostel as part of the punishment," Baidya said.
During a search of their rooms, narcotic substances were allegedly recovered. "Primarily, the action was for campus violence, but the suspected use of narcotics was also considered," Dean of Students’ Welfare S S Dhar said.
Baidya added that the Standing Institute Disciplinary Committee (SIDC) had conducted an inquiry and held the students responsible for violent conduct. They have been barred from attending classes for two consecutive semesters with immediate effect.
"Representatives from the ICCR visited the campus on Saturday to meet the students. Copies of the academic suspension letters have been sent to Cachar Police, the Zonal Director of ICCR’s Guwahati Regional Office, the Study in India sponsoring agency, and other relevant authorities," Baidya said.
According to students at the campus, the accused students went on rampage at the NIT and were under the influence of drugs. "They were armed with rods, knives and screwdrivers, and targeted Bangladeshi students from the final year, causing serious injuries in an attack that lasted nearly 30 minutes," a student was quoted by PTI as saying.
