Bengaluru: Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna was on Friday found guilty in a sexual abuse and rape case by Bengaluru's Special Court for People's Representatives. The former Hassan MP broke down in the court after the verdict was pronounced. Revanna is the son of JD(S) MLA and former minister HD Revanna and grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda.
Special Court Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat convicted Revanna in one of the four sexual assault cases registered against him. The court will announce quantum of punishment against the former JD(S) MP on Saturday.
Prajwal Revanna sexual assault case
Revanna, accused of sexually abusing several women, was arrested last year in connection with a case registered at the Holenarasipura Town Police Station. The 33-year-old was held from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on May 31, 2024, shortly after he landed there from Munich in Germany. He allegedly fled to Germany in April last year after several explicit videos involving him surfaced, ahead of polling in Hassan in Karnataka. Revanna was seeking re-election from the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, which he lost. Following a political furore over the matter, the Karnataka government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the cases against him and he was also suspended from JD(S).
As many as four separate cases of sexual harassment and rape have been registered against Revanna. The first case was filed against him on April 28 last year for allegedly sexually harassing his 48-year-old former house help. The woman was working as a domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. In her complaint, she alleged that Revanna raped her twice in 2021 and filmed the act on his mobile phone. The Bengaluru court convicted him in connection with this case.
