New Delhi: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday slammed Center for using Hindu names for military and security operations. He alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government aims 'to mix Hindutva in everything' it does as a party.

The Congress leader added that the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) is trying to portray everything as a Hindu versus Muslim conflict. He further slammed the party of polarising the situation by instigating the two communities against each other.

Firstly, the Congress MP criticised Centre for naming the anti-terror attack to eliminate terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack as "Operation Mahadev". He asked the ruling party about the basis of such a codename.

He then slammed the BJP for terming the retaliatory strikes of India in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir as "Operation Sindoor". He questioned the Center over the relevance of using a Hindu concept while naming an operation. The Congress leader further attacked the ruling party claiming that wars  are won when one nation's planes are attacked and others' are destroyed, claiming that name does not play a significant role in it.

'Come clean on losses suffered by India'

Chavan lambasted the government over its claim of killing more than " 100 terrorists during Operation Sindoor". He reminded Center to "come clean" on losses suffered during the for days of Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor was a series of retaliatory strikes carried out by the Indian Army on May 7, 2025, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was a response to a "barbaric" terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where 26 Indian tourists lost their lives.

Earlier this week, the Indian armed forces with the Jammu and Kashmir police gunned down three terrorists connected to the Pahalgam terror attack. One of the terrorists, Suleiman Shah alias Hashim Moosa is believed to be the mastermind behind the attack. The government titled the successful encounter as " Operation Mahadev."
