New Delhi: A late-night shooting at a crowded bar on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, left four people dead and at least 20 others injured early Sunday. The incident took place at Willie's Bar and Grill, a popular local spot.
According to reports, deputies were sent to the scene shortly after midnight following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found a large crowd gathered outside the bar. Multiple victims suffered from gunshot wounds. Four people were pronounced dead on the spot. Several others were rushed to nearby hospitals.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”
At least four of the injured victims were in critical conditions. Emergency response teams from across Beaufort County were deployed to assist in transporting the victims.
The identities of the deceased or the injured have not been released. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), have joined the investigation.
The state US Representative Nancy Mace expressed her condolences on X, writing, “Completely heartbroken to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.” Residents of St. Helena Island, described the incident as "unthinkable."
