Pithoragarh: In a long-awaited move, the Uttarakhand government has officially changed the name of "Khooni” village in Pithoragarh district to "Devigram.”
The decision comes after decades of requests from villagers who felt the name "Khooni”—which translates to "murderer”—cast a dark and unfair image over their peaceful community.
Emotional relief to the residents of the village
The renaming was confirmed through a government order issued recently, bringing smiles and emotional relief to the residents of the village. Locals had been campaigning for the change for years, arguing that the name was not only misleading but also hurtful to their identity and reputation.
Ajay Tamta played a key role
Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta, played a key role in pushing the proposal through various government departments. He shared the news on social media, saying, "Respecting public sentiments and fulfilling a long-standing demand, the government has issued a notification renaming Pithoragarh’s ‘Khooni’ village to ‘Devigram.’”
Tamta revealed that the process took nearly a year and required approvals from six different ministries. The villagers had personally approached him, expressing their desire for a name that reflected positivity and dignity. "The word ‘Khooni’ created a stigma. It was time to give the village a name that matched its peaceful nature,” he said.
From murderer’s village to village of the gods
The new name, "Devigram,” translates to "village of the gods,” and is seen as a symbol of purity and pride. Residents say they now feel a sense of respect and belonging that was missing before. "We are very happy. This name gives us hope and a fresh start,” said one villager.
