New Delhi: The Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party on Thursday announced its first list of 51 candidates for the upcoming Bihar assembly election, to be held in two phases on November 6 and 11. The list includes several well known names from academicians and doctors to former bureaucrats and police officers.
The list includes the granddaughter of former chief minister Karpoori Thakur, the daughter of former Union minister RCP Singh, and renowned mathematician Prof KC Sinha.
Among the names, Dr Jagriti Thakur, granddaughter of Karpoori Thakur and daughter of Dr Virendra Thakur, will contest from Morwa, while Lata Singh, daughter of RCP Singh -- once a close aide of chief minister Nitish Kumar -- will contest from Asthawan in Nalanda district.
Mathematician Prof KC Sinha, whose textbooks have been taught in Bihar schools for over three decades, has been fielded from Kumhrar. Sinha, a former Vice-Chancellor of Patna University, has authored more than 70 books and served in multiple academic leadership roles.
Senior advocate YB Giri, former Additional Advocate General of Bihar and Additional Solicitor General of India, will contest from Manjhi constituency. Giri has represented several high-profile cases, including those involving BPSC candidates, in the Patna high court.
From Muzaffarpur, Dr Amit Kumar Das, an alumnus of Patna Medical College and Hospital who runs a rural healthcare initiative with his wife, has been nominated. Other medical professionals in the fray include Dr BB Prasad (Motihari), Dr AK Das (Muzaffarpur), Dr Ajit Kumar (Imamganj), Dr Vijay Gupta (Ara), and Dr Shashi Shekhar Sinha (Gopalganj).
Former Bihar Police DG (Home Guards) RK Mishra, an early supporter of Jan Suraaj who played a role in inducting several retired officials into the party, is also among the candidates. Jan Suraaj has fielded Preeti Kinnar, a transgender, from Bhore in Gopalganj.
Interestingly, speculation around Prashant Kishor's own candidature remains unresolved. While Kishor has expressed interest in contesting from Raghopur -- RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's seat -- or Kargahar, his home constituency, the party has nominated Bhojpuri actor-singer Ritesh Ranjan (Pandey) from Kargahar, keeping alive the possibility of Kishor contesting from Raghopur.
According to party data, 16 per cent of the candidates are Muslims, and 17 per cent belong to Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs). In total, seven Muslim candidates, 17 EBCs, 11 from Backward Classes, and seven from reserved seats have been fielded, while the remaining are from the general category.
Bihar will vote in two phases next month, with the results to be declared on November 14.
