New Delhi: A viral video featuring suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir has raised eyebrows across Bengal. The video, shared by Kabir on social media, showed numerous trunks filled with cash inside the former MLA’s residence. Initially, viewers were shocked—until it was revealed that the money comprised donations Kabir received for constructing the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad.
On Saturday, December 6, the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya—Kabir laid the foundation stone of a new Babri Masjid in Rejinagar, Murshidabad. He stated that the construction would cost an estimated Rs 300 crore. However, Kabir appears unconcerned about funding; an anonymous individual has allegedly donated ₹80 crore for the project.
The viral video captured 11 trunks packed with currency notes. Around 30 people reportedly assembled to count the money. According to Kabir, Rs 93 lakh has already been deposited using digital scanners. Counting began after midnight, and so far, 7 out of the 11 trunks have been opened, yielding Rs 37 lakh. Sources claim that a total of Rs 1 crore 10 lakh has been deposited to date.
It is now believed that there will be no shortage of funds for the Babri Masjid construction. The larger question that remains is what impact Humayun Kabir’s initiative will have on the 2026 electoral landscape.
A few days ago, the TMC suspended MLA Humayun Kabir over his controversial remarks about building a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, his constituency. Reacting to this, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim shared a fiery response.“We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build a Babri masjid there. Why suddenly Babri Masjid? As per the party’s decision, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir,” Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim had stated.
It has been roughly eight months since parts of Murshidabad were scarred during the Waqf Act controversy. Now, the region is once again in the spotlight over issues of religious tension and misunderstanding.
