New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended its MLA Humayun Kabir for anti-party activities after his Babri mosque remarks sparked a massive political controversy. Kabir, who represents Bharatpur Assembly constituency of Murshidabad, has reportedly been at loggerheads with the party leadership for the past few months.
"We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri masjid. Why suddenly Babri masjid? As per the decision of our party, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir," Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said.
The Kolkata mayor further said those who do politics in the name of religion have no place in our party. He also said that the party had already warned the MLA.
Why is TMC MLA Humayun Kabir under fire?
The estranged TMC legislator has been facing the heat over his remarks that he would build a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. He had also warned that Muslims would take control of the NH-34 on December 6, the day Babri mosque in Uttar Pradesh was demolished. On Wednesday, he doubled down on his proposal and said he would go ahead with his December 6 ‘shilanyas’ of a Babri Masjid-like mosque, defying Raj Bhawan’s apprehensions, and warned of massive resistance if state administration tried to stop him.
What's TMC's stance?
The TMC has distanced itself from the MLA's statement and said that someone must have provoked him. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also said to be miffed with Kabir for his proposal to build Babri Masjid's replica in Murshidabad..
State minister and Bengal president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Siddiqullah Chowdhury warned that a "new emotional atmosphere" was being created to plunge Bengal into a "dangerous climate".
"I cannot match these dots," he said. "Someone has provoked him. I do not see how this benefits the Muslims."
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee dismissed Kabir's political importance and said that the people of West Bengal have trust in Mamata Banerjee. "Who says what does not matter. He has no importance," he added.
