Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government has given a special gift to women employees on the occasion of Karva Chauth. A public holiday has been declared on Friday, October 10, 2025, for all women working in government, non-government offices, educational institutions, and government establishments across the state.
The order was issued by Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman, making it clear that only female employees will get the benefit of this public holiday. The decision has been welcomed by women across Uttarakhand, especially those observing the fast.
Married women observe a strict fast without food or water on this day
Karva Chauth is a traditional festival celebrated mainly in North India, especially in states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. On this day, married women observe a strict fast without food or water for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Some men also observe the fast to support their wives. The fast continues throughout the day and is broken only after worshiping the moon at night.
It is not officially a national public holiday
In many government and private offices, women are allowed flexible working hours, early leave, or half-day on Karva Chauth. However, it is not officially a national public holiday. Most central government and state calendars do not include it as a declared holiday.
Women in Uttarakhand have appreciated the move
But in Uttarakhand, the government has taken a progressive step by officially recognizing the importance of this festival for women. It is seen as a way of supporting the cultural and emotional needs of women employees. Women working in schools, colleges, banks, government offices, and even private institutions have appreciated the move. Nirmala Badola, a teacher in Dehradun, said, "We all welcome this decision of government, this holiday will give us enough time to perform the rituals calmly and spend quality time with our families."
CM Dhami wished the women on this occasion
With this decision, Uttarakhand has set an example for other states, showing how even small steps can make a big difference in the lives of working women. On this occasion, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Facebook, "Tomorrow, on 10-10-2025, on the occasion of Karva Chauth, the sacred festival symbolizing unbroken marital bliss, a public holiday has been declared for women employees working in government, non-government offices, and educational institutions across the state.
This holiday is a symbol of respect for the dedication and love of women, and a small gesture to allow them to celebrate this special day with their families — with complete devotion and emotional focus, free from work-related responsibilities. Hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the women on the occasion of Karva Chauth!"
