New Delhi: Farmers in India have reason to cheer. The Central government will transfer over Rs 3,200 crore in crop insurance claim payments directly to the bank accounts of more than 30 lakh farmers on Monday, August 11. The money is being given to the farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
The event where the money will be distributed to the farmers will be chaired by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivaraj Singh Chouhan. It is being held at the Jhunjhunu Airstrip in Rajasthan. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma is the chief guest at the function.
Apart from this, the Union Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary, Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Kirodi Lal Meena, top officials of the ministry, farmer leaders and public representatives will be part of the function, reported DD News.
While farmers from Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Jaipur, Kotputli-Behror and other surrounding districts are expected to be present in person for the event, lakhs of others will join virtually.
Of the total amount to be disimbursed, farmers from Rajasthan will receive Rs 121 crore. This will benefit over 7 lakh cultivators in the state. The next state which will receive a huge amount of money under this scheme is Madhya Pradesh. Farmers from the state will get Rs 1,156 crore, while Chhattisgarh farmers will get Rs 150 crore. The other states will receive Rs 773 crore.
This is the first time that such a huge amount of money is being disbursed in the form of crop insurance payout in a single day, through Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT). The PMFBY was launched in 2016 and since then it has covered over 78 crore farmer applications and disbursed claims worth Rs 1.83 lakh crore.
