HC directs govt to maintain order in Bengal, declines to stay Babri Masjid model event

During Friday's hearing, state Advocate General Kishor Dutta informed the court that an adequate number of police personnel had already been deployed in Beldanga to maintain peace. The area has previously witnessed communal violence, and central forces remain stationed there pursuant to earlier Calcutta High Court orders.

New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Bengal government to maintain law and order in the state’s Murshidabad district. The order came a day after a TMC leader was suspended from the party for allegedly making remarks that could incite communal tension. The leader had announced plans to build a mosque in the district’s Beldanga area, modelled on the Babri Masjid that was demolished in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.

Lower court lawyer Sabyasachi Chatterjee said the petition was heard by a division bench led by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul. The bench emphasised that it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure law and order. “We had prayed to the court for a stay to ensure that no such activity leads to communal disharmony or poses danger to citizens,” Chatterjee added.

What did the petition say

The petition stated that the comments made by TMC MLA Humayun Kabir were derogatory and could disrupt Bengal’s communal harmony. “Such statements and hate speech on social media and YouTube news portals, especially from a member of the legislative assembly, may break the communal harmony of our state as well as our country,” it said.

During Friday’s hearing, state Advocate General Kishor Dutta informed the court that an adequate number of police personnel had already been deployed in Beldanga to maintain peace. The area has previously witnessed communal violence, and central forces remain stationed there pursuant to earlier Calcutta High Court orders.

Will Kabir form his own political party?

Kabir said he would abide by the court’s directive, adding that there would be no breach of law and order at the event. “In fact, it is a victory for democracy,” he said. He also mentioned that two clerics had been flown in from Saudi Arabia to recite verses from the Quran.

Kabir further said he plans to quit the TMC and launch his own party later this month, which will contest at least 135 of Bengal’s 294 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections.
