Impact of tsunami on India after Russia earthquake: INCOIS issues this warning

New Delhi: India's Tsunami Warning Centre run by the INCOIS on Wednesday said that the powerful earthquake which hit Russia earlier in the day, poses no threat to the Indian mainland or the broader Indian Ocean Region. There is no possibility of a Tsunami here, they added.

The statement by the INCOIS comes after a massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east. The earthquake triggered Tsunami warnings in several countries, including Japan, US and New Zealand.

Hindustan Times reported that the INCOIS also said that the USGS had updated its earlier reading of the earthquake which occurred off the coast of Kamchatka, from 8.7 to 8.8 magnitude. They said that this earthquake in Russia posed no tsunami threat to India or the Indian Ocean Region.

The agency further said that despite it being a powerful earthquake and despite several countries in the Pacific giving out tsunami warnings, the Indian coastline remained safe.

Meanwhile the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, has issued a warning for people staying in Tsunami affected regions. These regions include California, Hawaii and other West Coast states.

In a statement, the consulate said, "Indian nationals in California, other US West Coast states, and Hawaii are advised to take the following steps:

1. Monitor official alerts from US authorities

2. Move to higher ground immediately if a tsunami alert is issued

3. Avoid coastal areas

4. Be prepared for emergencies and keep devices fully charged,” the advisory read.

A helpline number was also released by the Indian Consulate. The people were advised to contact +1-415-483-6629 in case of any emergency.
